MIDORI HIROSE // Giggle in -==≡≡≡One, Ha Ha Crystals n’ Then Sum+‿ ◕)

On view September 14-October 19, 2024
Opening reception Saturday, September 14 (2–5pm)

Nationale is pleased to present Giggle in -==≡≡≡One, Ha Ha Crystals n’ Then Sum‿ ◕), Midori Hirose’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Her first solo show was in 2010, followed by the 2012 two person exhibition Mush, Mush, The Sloping Midnight Line with Carson Ellis. We are delighted to bring Ellis and Hirose together once again.

In Giggle in -==≡≡≡One, Ha Ha Crystals n’ Then Sum‿ ◕), Hirose debuts a new interactive glass installation and a gouache and ink canvas wall meditation, exploring transcendence through different forms of laughter. This project merges glass with giggle-induced movement, juxtaposing dynamic and static elements to explore the unseen impacts of the fourth dimension, revealing how time, space, and spiritual forces shape our reality, encouraging us to engage with dimensions beyond our immediate senses.

Aligning with Ha Ha Crystals, where laughter—whether a giggle, guffaw, chuckle, or chortle—serves as a form of transcendence, Hirose’s work suggests that these joyful acts can connect us to deeper, alchemical forces. By blending the movement of laughter with the experience of unseen impacts, her work invites viewers to reflect on the interplay between cosmic and personal energies.

This narrative emphasizes the capability of the unseen and the interconnectedness of matter, suggesting that unseen forces, both cosmic and personal, hold transformative energy. The installation reflects on the concept of "friends within" and hidden connections, inviting viewers to experience the intersection of cosmic frequencies, spiritual divination, and the joy of laughter, revealing the profound connections between the visible and invisible.

Midori Hirose (b. Hood River, OR) is a Japanese American interdisciplinary artist based in Portland, Oregon, who delves into what she calls "material storytelling" within her practice. Her work weaves a tapestry of memory, transformation, and connectivity, bridging spiritual divination with communal progress. Through personal and collective experiences, Hirose immerses viewers in the intricate dance of creation, connection, and the rhythmic cycles of reconnection that reflect the natural ebb and flow of the environment. Hirose has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA; and Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (now Oregon Contemporary) for the Portland Biennal in The Dalles, OR. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, The Lumber Room, and PDX Contemporary in Portland, OR; East/West Project, Berlin, Germany; Newberg Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland; and Fylkingen, Stockholm, Sweden.
