KYLE LEE // Regular Days
On view January 13–February 13, 2022
In Regular Days, a solo exhibition of recent paintings, Kyle Lee invites us to step away from our endlessly spinning world and pay attention to all those forgettable moments in life: a midnight walk to the gas station to get milk so as to sleep better, a socially awkward art opening during the in-between stage of the pandemic, a drunk roommate on the kitchen floor upset someone used her plates without asking. Like a soft Yo La Tengo song playing late at night, or reading a Raymond Carver story on a rainy Sunday, the small, intimate paintings presented in Regular Days offer slices of ordinary lives. You won’t find any Instagram influencers here, and for that we are grateful.
Kyle Lee grew up near Tampa Bay, FL. After traveling throughout the United States in his early twenties, Lee moved to Portland, OR, to attend Portland State University, from which he received his BFA in 2013 and his MFA in Contemporary Art Practice Studio in 2016. That year, he was a recipient of the Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize along Renee Sills and Roz Crews. Lee has exhibited in galleries around Portland, including Blackfish Gallery, Disjecta, and Erickson Gallery, and was a year long artist-in-residence at Mother Foucault’s Bookshop in 2019.
