checkmate (curated by Kate Shannon of chess haus)
On view December 7–December 29, 2024
Reception Saturday, December 7 (5-9pm)
checkmate is a (loosely) chess-themed group show curated by Kate Shannon. Shannon began her project, chess haus, earlier this year wanting to pay homage to the teachings of Bauhaus and as a way to connect people within the community through a tactile experience.
At chess haus events, such as the one Nationale hosted this spring, the potent air of competition sometimes intertwined with chess takes the backseat, as a more approachable, social environment is created for all skill levels to engage in a game or even just observe.
Since the early days of chess haus, Shannon began to see elements of chess within everyday life. Checkered floors, a hand painted equestrian sign, old columns... and the idea of creating an intentional space to view such relics was born. Her vision was to cultivate an exhibition that spoke to the beauty and polarity of the ancient game.
For checkmate, artists were encouraged to create works inspired by the history, strategy or physical elements of chess—checkered patterns, castles, horses, nods to kings and queens. The show features 24 artists from Portland and beyond and a wide range of medium: painting, drawing, sculpture, fabric & scent installations, ceramics, and metal work.
