For Give Me Shelter, his first solo painting exhibition at Nationale, Jaik Faulk records the conflicted existences of men returned home. Combining decided, gestural strokes and seeping, rusty tones into tangible reverberations of claustrophobic surroundings, Faulk’s scenes hint uneasily at the underlying trauma beneath forced domestic fronts. His silenced subjects collapse under an unseen present weight as their past identities- soldier, defender, hero- slowly disintegrate amidst the dusty furniture. Once narrowly escaped, now unavoidable, fate closes in as the kitchen light burns on.
